Rachel McMillan
RACHEL MCMILLIAN, PH.D. is an Assistant Professor in the College of Education at the Universityof Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Prior to the University of Illinois, Rachel was a high school social studies teacher in Cincinnati, Ohio. As a Black female scholar-activist directly impacted by mass incarceration, her research broadly explores two intersecting avenues: critical carceral studies and Black education. More specifically–through portraiture and storytelling–she focuses on the educational experiences of (formerly) incarcerated Black youth and education within carceral facilities. Additionally, Rachel leads a writing workshop for incarcerated students through the Education Justice Project and is actively involved with several community based organizations and initiatives in the fight to end mass incarceration.
