Project Description

Artist Profile

Keith LaMar

Keith LaMar is currently incarcerated on death row at the Ohio State Penitentiary in Youngstown, OH. On November 16, 2023, the State intends to execute him, even though he has maintained his innocence for nearly three decades within solitary confinement. Keith has detailed the story of his wrongful conviction in his autobiographical book Condemned. As an artist, Keith uses poetry, prose, and music to not only share the story of this incredible injustice, but to place his story within the broader history of enslavement and mass incarceration. Most recently, Keith collaborated with several jazz musicians—including Albert Marquès, Brian Jackson, and Samora Pinderhughes—to create an album titled Freedom First.
