Project Description

Artist Profile

Gary Fine

Gary Fine is the Director of the Durland Alternatives Library located on the Cornell University campus. Twenty years ago, in response to a single request for books sent to the library from Danni, a life sentence prisoner in solitary confinement, Gary began sending books to incarcerated men and women. Prisoner Express,   www.prisonerexpress.org quickly expanded into a program that provides incarcerated men and women with information, education, and opportunities for self-expression in a public forum. Utilizing creative writing programs, art instruction and distance learning programs focused on improving well-being, critical thinking and communication skills, Prisoner Express steps inside of prisons to let incarcerated individuals know that people care about them, they are not forgotten, and their thoughts and words matter and make a difference. Currently we have 4000 active participants involved in one or more programs. Recent journals, poems and artwork are archived at https://prisonerexpress.org/read-prisoner-writing/.
